Zamir White Will Be Ready When Called Upon

Entering the season, running back was not believed to be a position of strength for the Las Vegas Raiders, outside of All-Pro Josh Jacobs.

However, Las Vegas' 63-point outburst against the Los Angeles Chargers gave a glimpse of the potential of three other talented running backs on the roster.

Interim Coach Antonio Pierce said he expects Jacobs to be able to play on Christmas Day against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Although Jacobs sees most of the team's carries, Pierce says backup running back Zamir White prepares each week to contribute to the team when needed. Whether Jacobs plays or not hasn't impacted White's preparation.

"Well, first, I think Zamir [White] prepared himself each and every week for this opportunity, and he took full advantage of it," Pierce said. "Maybe the reps weren't there, the opportunity for carries. I don't think we hit the 20-number for him, but that's our kind of goal for all of our backs."

As he closes out the second season of his career, White's 17 carries for 69 yards and three receptions for 16 yards against the Chargers showed his potential as a starting running back in the National Football League.

"But what I saw was a physical runner," Pierce said. "He's somebody who was moving the pile, that was straining to get every inch, every foot, every yard he could get. He was productive in the passing game and productive in pass blocking as well. And when you say audition, every day is an audition, that's football.

"Everybody is on a day-to-day, minute-by-minute contract because we can all get fired at the blink of an eye. So, that's how we approach the day. Guys know it. Just take advantage of your opportunities, and he did just that."

The second-year running back has seen only roughly 10 percent of the team's carries this season, but has made the most out of his opportunities on game days and on the practice field. White says his focus remains unchanged, no matter how many carries he gets on game day.

"I'm locked in still," White said. "Just going to practice every day and grinding. In and out, every day, I take every play seriously."

White says his daily routine is no different whether he gets the start or has to wait to hear his name called in relief of one of the best running backs in the National Football League.

"No, because I go so hard every day in practice," White said. "It's the same for me. Every day, I put a lot on myself, whether I'm starting or not. I just really go hard, regardless."

Most teams aim to have more than 100 yards of rushing per game. Pierce has stated that is his goal as well.

Fortunately, the Raiders can get those yards from their star running back. Or, they can use the backs behind Jacobs on the depth chart to collectively reach that goal, starting with White

The Silver and Black will return to action versus their AFC West rivals, the Kansas City Chiefs, on Christmas Day at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Don't miss it on Monday, December 25, at 1 p.m. EST/10 a.m. PST.
